Light and lighting technologies are essential to modern daily life, touching on its every aspect. These technologies require well-founded knowledge, both fundamental and applied, to ensure that they can be used with confidence in their safety and quality.
CIE's Research Strategy exists to inspire researchers to investigate important topics to shape the next generation of guidance and standards. Light and lighting research will continue to contribute achieving 12 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, addressing crucial global challenges.
The new Research Strategy places a strong emphasis on overarching themes such as diversity and digitalization, cutting across six key areas that span scientific disciplines and CIE Divisions.

The CIE Research Strategy is maintained over a four-year basis, in keeping with the CIE’s quadrennial cycle. It has recently undergone a minor revision at the midpoint of the cycle, with some small editorial changes and clarifications, but it has not changed substantially.
