Collaboration between CIE and EURAMET
In 2017 the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) and EURAMET signed a Memorandum of Understanding to intensify their existing cooperation. Both organizations have a strategic goal to support scientific advancement and technological innovation in the areas of measurement and standardization.
EURAMET, the Regional Metrology Organization (RMO) of Europe, enables the cooperation of National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) in Europe in fields such as research in metrology, traceability of measurements to the SI units, international recognition of national measurement standards and the related Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMC). Through knowledge transfer and cooperation amongst its members EURAMET facilitates the development of the national metrology infrastructures.
It is anticipated that the close collaboration between EURAMET’s Technical Committee for Photometry and Radiometry (TCPR) and the CIE will foster progress in metrology research and the traceability of measurements to the SI units related to colorimetric, photometric, radiometric, photobiological, photochemical and photon-based quantities. The large collection of CIE publications, including international standards, technical reports, notes and proceedings in the fields included within its scope, are valuable for the work in EURAMET’s committees.
Joint activities between both organisations take place, which exemplify the basis of the CIE – Euramet collaboration. For example, in 2016, the CIE Tutorial on Visual Appearance Fundamentals and Measurement, held in conjunction with the 4th CIE Expert Symposium on Colour and Visual Appearance, was supported by the EMPR project ‘Multidimensional reflectometry for industry’. More recently, the CIE tutorial on the international measurement standard for LED lighting products (CIE S 025) benefited from the outcome of the EMRP project ‘Metrology for efficient and safe innovative lighting’. Yoshi Ohno, CIE President at the time the MoU was signed, commented that “the new Memorandum of Understanding will formalise the existing good collaboration between EURAMET and CIE, and encourage further joint promotional, educational, technical, or scientific initiatives.”
In addition, both organizations would like to collaborate on the design and development of research projects which address the standardisation aspects related to the measurement of light, optical radiation, colour, optical properties of materials, photobiological and photochemical quantities. “We would like to encourage CIE to identify measurement research needs relevant to documentary standardization and submit them as potential research topics within our European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research,” comments Beat Jeckelmann, EURAMET Chairperson.
