Life exists on Earth because there is light. We often take for granted that the Sun will rise each morning and set each night. Without much thought, we flick a switch to illuminate our interiors with electric light and see road lights automatically turn on after dark. Because light surrounds us almost constantly, we risk overlooking its importance in achieving significant societal goals, such as those encapsulated in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Applying a better understanding of light and lighting to education, daily habits, agriculture, healthcare, commerce, and ecology will contribute to making the world more beautiful, equitable, healthy, and sustainable.
