The visual field of human vision has been studied for a long time and many scientific papers have been published on this topic. Technical Report CIE 255:2025 reviews a number of studies on the human visual field, though not exhaustive, in order to allow a better understanding of the role of the visual field by providing a way of classification with regard to its sensory functions and visual tasks.
Two major categories are addressed: one for finding and obtaining information including detection, discrimination, resolution, identification, motion detection, etc., and the other one for integration of information to do a vision-related task, such as reading, eye-and-motion coordination, etc. For each category, relevant studies and some of their typical data are presented. Examples of applications relying on the knowledge of the functional visual field are also presented.
The document is written in English, with a short summary in French and German. It consists of 44 pages with 21 figures and 4 tables and is readily available from the CIE Webshop or the National Committees of the CIE.
