CIE is excited to announce its participation in the upcoming IEEE Sustainable Smart Lighting World Conference (LS2024), scheduled to be held at Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands, from November 12-14, 2024.

Representing CIE at this conference will be Peter Thorns, CIE VP of Standards, and Head of the Strategic Lighting Applications at Thorn Lighting Ltd, UK.

Peter Thorns has worked in Thorn Lighting and Zumtobel Group since 1985, holding various roles including electronics research and development, manufacturing, software development, photometry, optical design, and lighting applications. He is the current Vice-President of Standards for the CIE, chair of ISO/TC 274, and is involved in numerous CEN and BSI committees. He is also active in the UK Lighting Industry Association and LightingEurope.

Mr. Thorns will deliver a presentation titled "V(λ) – Past and Future." This talk will explore the V(λ) spectral luminous efficiency function, which forms the foundation of our lighting units, photometry, and measurement equipment. Celebrating its 100th anniversary, the presentation will delve into the history of this fundamental curve, discuss some of its challenges, and consider potential future developments.

About the conference

The IEEE Sustainable Smart Lighting World Conference (LS2024) aims to provide an excellent forum for scientists and engineers worldwide, both in academia and in industry, to share and exchange the latest progress on the science and technology of lighting. This event will provide a unique forum to discuss and debate the latest developments in energy, environmental and human welfare impact of light, light sources, and lighting infrastructure, and their interaction with healthy buildings. It brings together researchers, developers and policy makers with interest and expertise across technology, effects of light on humans and other living species, design and human interaction and applications. This interaction will be inspiration for impactful innovations and will give birth, for sure, to new successful collaborations.

The 19th International Symposium on Science and Technology of Lighting is Organized by the Intelligent Lighting Institute (ILI), Eindhoven University of Technology, in coordination with IEEE.
