Chairs: Dr. Roelof Hut (University of Groningen) & Dr. Robert Lucas (University of Manchester)
The CIE is co-hosting the 4th Manchester Workshop on Light Metrics for Biology: Light Pollution, a collaborative event bringing together leading experts to advance discussions on measuring and mitigating the impact of artificial light at night.
Several CIE experts will contribute to this important discussion, including Mr. Peter Thorns, CIE Vice-President Standards, and Dr. Gaël Obein, CIE Division 2 Secretary. Additionally, the CIE Reportership R6-50: Optimal Spectral Weighting Functions for Biological and Ecological Effects of Environmental Light Pollution, was established under CIE Division 6: Photobiology and Photochemistry with Dr. Altug Didikoglu, Assistant Professor at the Izmir Institute of Technology, Türkiye, serving as the Reporter. The Division Reporter will summarize discussions from this workshop, with findings published as a Technical Note (TN), providing a foundation for further research.
About the Workshop: Outdoor light at night has the capacity to have detrimental effects on both human and ecosystem health. A first step in quantifying this polluting effect and assessing the mitigation strategies is to establish appropriate methods of measurement. Identifying a suitable wavelength weighting function to apply when quantifying light pollution is particularly challenging due to the wide range of organisms and biological processes impacted by nighttime lighting. This workshop will bring together experts in photobiology and the ecosystem impacts of light at night to achieve consensus on the most appropriate wavelength weighting function(s) for quantifying light pollution. The recommendations of this group will be submitted for publications in the form of a peer-reviewed scientific review article and a CIE divisional report.
Please note that this is a closed meeting.
