glow discharge

electric discharge in which the secondary emission from the cathode is much greater than the thermionic emission

Note 1 to entry: The glow discharge is characterized by a considerable cathode fall (typically 70 V or more) and by low current density at the cathode (some 10 A⋅m−2).

Note 2 to entry: This entry was numbered 845-07-12 in IEC 60050-845:1987.

Note 3 to entry: This entry was numbered 17-502 in CIE S 017:2011.
